Curriculum Aims

At Heathfields Infant and Wilnecote Junior Academy, we aim to provide children with purposeful and meaningful opportunities to become well-rounded citizen within society through the delivery of our PSHE curriculum.

PSHE Curriculum Intent

At Heathfields Infant and Wilnecote Junior Academy, it is our intent that we incorporate PSHE (personal, social and health education) into our everyday school life; a lot of our lessons cover many aspects of these key life skills implicitly. Wellbeing and good mental health are of paramount importance and our pupils are encouraged to share their wellbeing at regular points throughout the week either with us or through exploring these themselves during their self-regulation time. We aim to develop a climate where pupils learn to understand and monitor their own feelings as well as feel empowered to seek support should they need it. As a school, it is also imperative to support the children’s spiritual, moral, social, and cultural development. We believe that all stakeholders in our school uphold positive values, morals and beliefs which are in line with the core British Values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty, mutual respect, and tolerance for those with different faiths and beliefs. A strong sense of community and the wider world is central to our ethos of PRIDE, and this equips children with the knowledge, skills, and strategies to live healthy, happy, full, safe, and responsible lives. 

What is PSHE (Personal, Social, Health and Economic education)?

PSHE education is a planned programme of learning through which children and young people acquire the knowledge, understanding and skills they need to manage their lives, now and in the future. As part of a whole-school approach, PSHE education develops the qualities and attributes pupils need to thrive as individuals, family members and members of society.

What do schools have to teach in PSHE Education?

Every school needs to have a broad and balanced curriculum that promotes the spiritual, moral, cultural, mental, and physical development of pupils, prepares them for the opportunities, responsibilities, and experiences of later life’ and promotes British values.

PSHE Implementation

• Children are given the chance to explore different aspects of themselves and the world through the JIGSAW PSHE curriculum.  
• PSHE is all-inclusive and diverse where any misconceptions are addressed to enhance PSHE concepts. 
• Diversity is taught explicitly to ensure that children are aware of what this entails and how this relates to real life contexts. 
• Children are given plentiful opportunities to explore other elements of being a well-rounded citizen.

PSHE Education at Heathfields Infant and Wilnecote Junior Academy

The teaching and learning of PSHE is divided into 6 strands that cover topics which are relevant to the lives that children live today and prepares them for the future.

The 6 strands are:

• Being Me in My World
• Celebrating Difference
• Dreams and Goals
• Healthy Me
• Relationships
• Changing Me

As an academy, we also recognise the need for the continuous development of our curriculum to coincide with our rapidly changing and evolving world. Therefore, we also aim to support the social and moral and development of our children through the teaching of Diversity and Safety Education.

PSHE deals with the diverse beliefs, values, and attitudes that individuals and societies hold. We want to help pupils to develop themselves, their understanding of the world, and their ability to communicate their feelings. PSHE helps children to acquire British values and attitudes, which are necessary if they are to make sense of their experiences within school and life itself.  PSHE education cannot exist in isolation, it is underpinned by our own school values of PRIDE, by inspiring all to excellence through upholding the values of perseverance, respect, inquisitiveness, determination, and enthusiasm in everything that we do.   

Through PSHE, we believe we can enhance children’s education and help them become caring, respectful, and confident individuals. We endeavour to help children learn about the importance of healthy, respectful relationships, focusing on family and friendships and teaching the protected characteristics as set out in the Equality Act 2010.

PSHE Subject Impact

In PSHE, we strive to ensure that our pupils become well-rounded, open-minded citizens. We value difference and promote diversity, which in turn ensures children are pushed to achieve their full potential as a good citizen. As a result of the PSHE curriculum and our self-regulation stations, children at Heathfields Infant and Wilnecote Junior Academy develop a healthy growth mindset, self-confidence, and an increased understanding of the impact that individuals’ actions can have on their own and others’ lives. Children demonstrate a progression of knowledge and skills throughout their school life which they continuously build on and embed. Children are given every opportunity to develop fundamental life-skills necessary to become well-rounded people in the wider world.  

Involving the Wider Community

We aim to share as much of our PSHE learning with parents/caregivers as we can as it is important that our children remember the skills that we have taught them in school and are able to apply them both in school and at home. This will be done in several ways, such as:

• Inviting parents into school to support some of the amazing opportunities provided for our children.
• Communicating information via letters.
• Inviting external agencies and charities to visit our school to provide our children with enriching experiences.
• Sharing our learning and experiences of PSHE on the school website.
• Sharing media of our learning via the school’s social media.
