In Year 4 we have been growing cress. We discussed as a class what cress would need to grow and experimented with four different variables. Each day we observed and compared the changes.
In our Burps, Bottoms and Bile topic we have been looking at how to look after our teeth and their functions, for this experiment we observed how well we brush our teeth. We brushed our teeth, then we chewed a plaque disclosing tablet which revealed how much plaque was left. The children all really enjoyed this experiment and it has encouraged them to take better care when brushing their teeth.
Continuing to look at how to look after our teeth by having a healthy diet, we have looked at different variations of drinks and the effect they have on our teeth. We boiled 5 eggs as an egg shell protects the egg like enamel protects our teeth. We then put the eggs in the different drinks and revisited them a week later to see what had changed.
For science day Year 4 became scientists and carried out experiments. We looked at what foods contain starch and if fizzy drinks cause us to burp.
We experimented with how food travels through the digestive system. We started with 'eating' beans on toast for breakfast, we then ate a banana and followed through the process of the digestive system.
