Activity 3 - Make a Boat
This science challenge will make you think about the properties of materials.
What materials do you think will float? Make a list of those which you think will float in water and those which will sink.
Have you ever wondered what boats are made from?
Your challenge today is to make a cargo boat which will hold a cargo safely without sinking.
The cargo which needs to be carried safely will be coins (ask your grown up if they have any 1p or 2p coins that you can borrow)
First, you will need to design your boat and think about materials which you have at home to build your boat (don't make it too big as you will have to test it in the kitchen sink - or you could use a paddling pool if you have one in your garden on this hot day)
Your boat must be able to float and you can test it to see how many coins your boat can hold before it sinks.
Heres a few examples;
Now collect your materials and build your boat.
Once its built, it's ready to test - get a grown up with you to fill the sink with water and to help you count your coin cargo.
Please take a picture of your boat to send in to us at school - don't forget to tell us how many coins it held.
We cant wait to see your boats
