Investigate the earthworm population in your local environment. Observe the earthworms and identify different species.
Use different ‘worm-charming’ techniques that coax earthworms to the surface. Measure the length and width of a sample field to calculate its total area. Use one of the worm-charming techniques to help collect earthworms from a square metre of their sample field. Then identify and count all collected earthworms. You can then calculate an average number of earthworms per square metre. Use your calculation and the area of the sample field to estimate its earthworm population.
