War time recipe

Get your apron at the ready, today you are cooking!

Look at the wartime recipe book and choose a recipe to make.

Whilst you are measuring out the ingredients have a chat with your grown ups.

  • What different units of measurement are used to measure different things?
  • What can you remember about the different units of measurements?
  • How many grams are in a kilogram?
  • Can you remember how heavy a kilogram of sugar and flour felt? Do you have a full bag of sugar or flour at home, so that you can remind yourself?
  • How many grams are in half, a quarter and 3/4 of a kilogram?
  • How many ml are there in litre?

Wartime Recipes

Challenge

Choose 3 recipes.

How much of each ingredient would you need if:

a) You wanted it to feed twice as many people.

b) Feed 3 times as many people.

c) Feed 8 times as many people.

Challenge

The recipes are not very well written.

Improve one of them!

You could:

Use better imperatives (bossy verbs e.g. mix, pour).

Use adverbs e.g. carefully.

Use expanded noun phrases e.g. a thick paste.

Use the word mat and example instruction text to help you.
