Welcome toThe Federation of Heathfields Infant and Wilnecote Junior SchoolsACHIEVING AND GROWING TOGETHER WITH PRIDE

Thursday

Using inverted commas to show speech

This topic is also covered on the BBC bitesize daily lessons, where there are 2 videos and 3 activities. You can either do the activities on the bitesize website or the ones below. (Year 4 - English - 30th April)

Task 1: Watch the BBC Bitesize videos linked above.

When using inverted commas, we need to remember some key points:

  • put them around what the speaker is saying
  • separating the speech from the rest of the sentence using either a ,?! or .
  • start a new line each time a new speaker starts
  • start all speech with  capital letter.

For example: "I told you I was right, it is this way!" shouted the Man sarcastically.

Task 2: Write a short story of your choice using lots of speech. Try and use different synonyms for said. Be creative, this can be about anything you like, use your great imaginations! I have attached an example of a short story using speech.

REMEMBER to send your learning to the year group email so we can see what you have been up to - year4@wilnecote-junior.staffs.sch.uk.
